WeChat Pay & Alipay for Canadian Merchants: Complete Guide
Why this matters in Vancouver and Toronto
If your store is in Richmond, Burnaby, downtown Vancouver, Markham, North York or central Toronto, a meaningful share of your foot traffic carries WeChat Pay and Alipay as their default wallet. Many of these customers will not carry a Canadian card. If you do not accept these wallets, they walk to the place next door that does.
This guide is the practical version — what we actually file when we onboard a Canadian merchant.
Settlement and fees
- Settlement is in CAD, deposited to your existing Canadian business bank account
- Typical effective fee: 1.8% – 2.4% depending on volume and acquirer
- T+1 settlement is standard. Same-day available at higher tiers
KYC and documentation
You'll need:
- Business registration (BC Inc, ON Inc, sole prop, federal corp — all accepted)
- GST/HST number
- Director ID and proof of address
- Storefront photo and business license
- Estimated monthly volume
Onboarding typically takes 5–10 business days. If your business has been in operation under 6 months, expect to provide additional bank statements.
Refund flow
This is the part most merchants miss. Refunds happen back to the original Chinese wallet — they do not appear as a CAD refund on your statement. Your POS must be integrated with the wallet refund API or you'll be doing manual reconciliation forever. Make sure your provider supports one-tap refund from the POS receipt screen.
Common mistakes
- Treating it like a credit card terminal: WeChat / Alipay are scan-to-pay. The customer scans your QR code or you scan theirs. No tap, no swipe.
- Not training staff on payer-side errors: 90% of "it didn't work" cases are the customer's wallet balance, not your terminal. Train staff to ask the customer to check.
- Ignoring the receipt language: Default receipts are in English. You can configure bilingual receipts that show the wallet name and order ID — much faster for customer disputes.
When it's worth it
If even 5% of your monthly volume could come from these wallets, the integration pays for itself in the first month. For Asian-cuisine restaurants, bubble tea, Asian grocery and beauty in our markets, the share is often 15–35%.
We've turned on WeChat / Alipay at 400+ Canadian merchants. Average lift in first 60 days: 4–9% top-line revenue, just by no longer turning customers away.
