Service Robots in Vancouver Restaurants: Real ROI Data

The robotics question every restaurant owner asks

"Is it actually worth it, or is it a gimmick?"

Fair question. Service robots became a meme during 2022–2023 when every restaurant magazine ran the same hero photo. Two years later we have actual deployment data. Here's what the numbers say.

The honest payback math

A delivery / runner robot in BC currently costs around $12,000–$18,000 capex (or roughly $400–$600/month on a 36-month lease). It does not replace a server. What it does is offload trips to and from the kitchen, freeing your floor staff for higher-value tasks: greeting, upselling, table turn.

In a 60-seat casual dining venue we tracked over 6 months:

• Server walking distance dropped 38%
• Average table-turn time improved by 4 minutes
• Server tip income went up 11% (more time at the table = better service = better tips)
• Owner kept the same headcount but added Saturday brunch service without burning out staff

Effective payback at this venue: 9 months.

Where robots actually fail

Be honest with yourself. Robots are a bad fit if:

• Your floor plan has stairs, narrow doorways under 80cm, or carpet over 15mm
• Your service style requires server-to-table dish presentation (fine dining)
• Your peak rush is under 90 minutes — there's not enough volume to amortize

Robots are a great fit for:

• Casual dining, hot pot, BBQ, bubble tea cafés with seating
• Buffets and large-volume venues with long server walking paths
• Venues understaffed during specific shifts (lunch, late night)

What we recommend

Start with one unit on a 30-day pilot. Measure server step counts (cheap fitness tracker on the apron), table-turn times, and average ticket. If two of those three improve by more than 15%, scale to two or three units. If not, the unit goes back — no awkward conversation.

The robot is a tool. Tools that don't earn their keep get returned. We've taken back exactly 3 units out of 80+ deployments in BC. The other 77 are still running.
