Loyalty Programs That Actually Bring Customers Back
Why most loyalty programs fail
Walk into any café and you'll see a stack of dusty punch cards behind the register. Nobody fills them. Nobody redeems them. They exist because the owner thought "loyalty = punch card" in 2008 and never updated the playbook.
A real loyalty program in 2025 has three jobs:
- Capture identity at first visit (phone or wallet pass)
- Trigger a second visit within 14 days
- Surface high-value customers so you can market to the top 20%
If your program does not do all three, throw it out.
The structure that works
Based on 200+ loyalty rollouts across BC and Ontario, here's the pattern:
First visit: minimum-friction signup
QR code on the receipt. Scan, enter phone, done. 6 seconds. Do not ask for email, birthday, or address. You can ask later.
Second-visit trigger
Auto-send a single SMS or wallet push within 48 hours: "Thanks for visiting. Here's $5 off your next order — valid 14 days." This single message converts 18–28% of first-time customers into repeat customers in our data.
Tiered rewards
After 5 visits, customer unlocks a "regular" tier with a free upgrade. After 15 visits, "VIP" with surprise gifts. The point is not the reward — it's the status game. Customers will go out of their way to maintain a streak they've started.
Birthday and lapse triggers
Two automated touches per year per customer:
- Birthday: free item, redeemable in a 7-day window
- 60-day lapse: "We miss you" with a small incentive
That's it. No push notifications every Tuesday. No email blasts. Two triggers, automatic, forever.
What to measure
- Repeat rate within 14 days of first visit (target: 25%+)
- Average visits per active member per month (target: 2.5+)
- Top 20% revenue contribution (target: 60%+ of program revenue)
If you cannot pull these numbers from your loyalty platform, your platform is the problem.
Loyalty is not about giving discounts. It's about making the next visit feel inevitable.
